Our Year 4 classes are called
The Monkeys and The Owls.
Our Summer term topic in Year 4 is “All Around the World”! We will be working on our geography skills, learning about longitude/ latitude, continents and different climates. After the half term we will be focusing on the North Yorkshire seaside town of Whitby! We will be learning about its geography and even taking a trip there ourselves on the 12th June.
In English we are continuing to explore a range of genres and writing styles whilst working on our editing and improving skills. We will be learning about a range of myths and legends through drama, poetry and creative writing. Then, following our Whitby trip, we will be reading a story about an infamous fictional resident of Whitby. Can you get who?
Our science topics this term are sound and food chains. We will be learning about how sounds are made and how they travel. We will also be learning about frequency and pitch and how some animals use this to their advantage. To finish the school year we will be finding out about food chains and the role all animals have in the eco system.
We are lucky enough to have a FA football coach in to start the term! Bobby will be in on Monday mornings with year 4 working on our ball control skills, agility and speed. These skills are transferable and apply to wide range of sports. After the half term we will be honing our Athletics skills ready for sports day! We will be working on throwing, catching and endurance.
In art we will be considering perspective and using this to draw landscapes. We will be looking at some famous artists and using their work to inspire us. Following our trip to Whitby we will be using our own photos to create Whitby landscapes in a variety of medias.
Our PPA day will be changing to Friday, however the children will continue to have specialist
Spring Term in Year 4
This term in Year Four we are learning all about the Aztecs and Mayans. We will begin with the geography of Central America and the timeline of both civilisations. Then we will be learning about the beliefs, myths and lifestyles of the Mayan and Aztec people. Our school trip will be based around our topic and it is sure to be one to remember…however we are keeping it a secret for now!
In English we are continuing to explore a range of genres and writing styles whilst working on our editing and improving skills. We will be learning about the deforestation taking place in the rainforest through the story The Great Kapok tree. Then they will work on their powers of persuasion by writing letters to the timber companies persuading them to stop cutting the trees down. We will also be learning about the features of non chronological reports and writing our own for for our Big Write.
In maths we will be continuing to work on all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) using written and mental methods. We will continue to learn our times tables, work on our fractions and improve our knowledge of shape and measure.
Our science topics this term are habitats and digestion. We will be learning about how animals have adapted to their habitats, creating identification keys and undertaking an experiment to see whether an animal really would choose the most suitable habitat. In the second half of the term we will be learning about the process of digestion and the path food takes once it has passed our lips. We then focus on the role our teeth play in digestion and how different animals have different teeth depending on the diet they eat.
During this term we will be honing on our gymnastic skills by developing our flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance on apparatus. The children will create, perform and evaluate sequences in small groups.
Throughout the spring term we will be working on our Design & Technology skills by combining them with our topic of the Mayans and Aztecs. We will be designing and creating Aztec masks using paper mache. These will be decorated using inspiration from Aztec masks. We will also be sampling traditional Aztec food and creating tortillas based on the food we have tried.
We will continue to have our PPA afternoons on Wednesday with specialist teachers coming in to teach music, Computing, Spanish and PE.
